The spot : Rochefort History
The caves dug by Wamme in Rochefort delivered vestiges dating from the age of
iron and to the tombs with incineration located on this territory testify to a
human establishment as of the first centuries of our era.
The site seems to be strengthened as of the Roman time to guarantee the safety
of the area. The cemeteries mérovingiens aligned along the driving way of
Rochefort with Eprave are revealing density of the population which was
maintained there.
The ground is initially known under the term of Behogne, that of an old deanery
which depends already into 943 on the Church on Liege , term which makes place with that of Rochefort indicating the top of the locality
where raises a feudal castle perhaps built with the site of the ancient
fortress. The inhabitants are equipped into 1285 with a charter with franknesses.
Capital of the county of the same name which constitutes the most important
feudal field of the principality of Liege, Rochefort lives under the aegis of
the following lords: Montaigu, which is claimed downward of a Norman chief established in the area at
the end of IXème S., them Duras (1147), Walcourt-Rochefort (1187), Stolberg
(1544), Loewenstein (1574), Stolberg (1737). A part of the territory of Rochefort overflows of the county, takes part in the
ground of Hamerenne, Luxembourg seigniory depending on prévôté on Durbuy.
Its history is also related to that of the abbey Our-injury of Saint-Remy
founded at the end of XIIIème S. by moniales cistercians, replaced by monks of
the same order in 1464; this community was dissolved with the Revolution but in 1887, a group of
Cisterciens come from the abbey of Achel returned the life to him. The name of Saint-Remy is associated that of a coloured marble of very large
celebrity, extracted from careers close to the abbey, which was used for the
ornamentation of the most prestigious buildings of Europe.
Set up in commune within the framework of the territorial reorganization imposed
by the Revolution, Rochefort covers a surface of 2.861 ha and account at the
dawn of Belgian independence approximately 200 houses of which hardly stone
forty built.
Chief town of canton, consequently equipped with administrative organizations,
Rochefort knew with XIXème and XXème S. an evolution which centered its economy
on the commercial sector, which currently occupies 65 % of the working
population and felt tourist importance of the area
The secondary industry, represented initially by the mining, was converted then
into various companies with the favour of an industrial park of more than 50 ha.
The primary sector, exerted in the surrounding campaigns, is characterized by a
constant reduction in extended from the cultivated grounds which represent
hardly 15 % of the territory in 1950.
